Hi lads and lassies, my old gpsmap451 powers up and some coloured lines appear on the screen and I can still hear my depth alarm sounding and as this is an old model I can`t get parts, does this mean the screen is totally knackered or could it be some other problem.

It doesn't sound good, is it possible to supply a photo of the screen?

I powered up this evening and weirdly got the Garmin logo before the screen went completely white.

It looks like under the right conditions the screen is OK, this is all guess work, but if the unit has been left unpowered for a long time the internal backup battery may have failed, on older units this backup battery can stop the unit working completely as it can get so 'flat' that it prevents the external power from adequately supplying the unit

You could try leaving the 451 powered for a few hours as it may temporarily charge the internal battery, if it is this battery that is faulty you would have to open the 451 (not easy on waterproof units), you are looking for something like this VL1220 :-

NOTE it may be flat on the PCB rather than standing up

I found the battery and it is only about 6mm and soldered in place so because Im the type of fella that uses a hammer rather than a screwdriver Ill get my buddy to try remove the battery and replace it.

Had a guy take a look at it but he doesnt have the real small battery that solders in to the unit but he is going to try source one. He did ascertain that the existing battery was showing 2 volts and he is not sure if this is correct. Anyway I asked him just to get a new battery and give it a try.

The backup battery is usually 3 Volts so 2 Volts is what you would expect to find when it needs replacing, do you have the model number of the battery ?
