    Hi everyone,

I am planning to climb Mt. Elbrus (Russia) in 2 weeks and I have bought a second hand Oregon 650 but I cannot find any TOPO maps of this region. I read that I can create a custom map from various sources but I haven't found a way to do it. If I search for the area in Google maps with terrain switched on, I can get a reasonable TOPO but how can I get this onto the Garmin device? Is there a decent upto date tutorial out there. I was looking on Youtube but all the video examples I saw were using Google Earth from back in the day when it was a free app to download. It doesn't seem to be possible to do it that way anymore.
Another possibility might be to buy the paper map and scan it but I have no idea how to do it this way either. The support for the custom map feature seems to be pretty much non-existent. If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it. I really don't want to die if I get caught in a blizzard and can't see where I'm going!

    Many thanks in advance!
    Tony

Have a look at this Garmin PDF file that describes how to make your own maps using Google Earth

You could also try Open Street Map with Topo turned on (map layer = cycle), these maps are downloadable to Garmin units
