I'm looking to design custom UK road routes on a large screen, such as a laptop, then transfer to a portable GPS device for navigation in a car. I'm currently using Windows Garmin Basecamp connected to a Garmin Drive 52 GPS, but I find the software too clunky, slow and old to be usable. It would be nice to use Google Maps since it's so fast. Does anyone have any suggestions for hardware and software combinations? A phone app is OK for navigation, but I need a larger screen to design routes.

It looks like Google Maps is only setup to use Google products (what a surprise !), so any Route created in Google Maps on a desktop can only be exported to a Google App. on a cell phone, you would need to find a desktop program such as Google Maps that will export a GPX file (or some other universal map file) that can be imported to your Drive 52

Basecamp doesn't have the best interface but I've never found it slow to use, it also has the advantage of using exactly the same maps as you satnav which Goole Maps won't
