I received a 1490 back from Garmin as my 1 year old 1490 refused to boot. It was out of warranty by about a month and they replaced it with a refurb at no charge.

    Thank you Garmin!

It needs a map update and was wondering if there is a best way to do this. I us Express for updating and it seems to work well, except I have to reinstall every time I want to use it.

Next question is about using an SD card in the 1490. What exactly should I use it for?

    Thanks,
    Phil

i have found not to many users get back to you when it's in regards to extra SD cards ..

I actually spoke with Garmin direct, so I can pass on the information ..

I do not know exactly what the max is for a card size for your particular GPS, but the card can be used in multiple ways .. as an extra storage card for MP3s .. extra maps ..

the other way is this .. let's say the storage built into your GPS is 4GB .. as you update your GPS, you will notice that your free space starts to go down. If you have an extra SD card inserted, once your internal memory is full, updates of any kind will fall over into the SD card.

I was curious as to the actual function of the SD card myself .. I have a 2797 with 8GB internal storage with maybe 1.67GB free at the moment .. I added another 8GB using the SD slot and then tried to find out exactly how things work .. no answers here, so contacted Garmin direct. A little "cart before the horse" so to speak .. if you follow.

I do not frequent this forum because of the response I have receive myself to prior questions, so I would recommend contacting Garmin support for answers as well.
